WBBM-FM (Radio station : Chicago, Ill.)

 Organization

Historical Notes

WBBM was founded in 1911 in Lincoln, Illinois. Its call sign originally stood for World's Best Battery Maker, as founders Leslie and Ralph Atlass owned a battery company. The station moved to Chicago in 1924 or 1925. In 1928, the station became a CBS affiliate, and the broadcasting company bought a controlling interest in the stock in 1929. By 1933, CBS completely owned the station. WBBM-FM was at first a simulcast of WBBM-AM, which in the 1930s and 1940s broadcasted hit music. Eventually, WBBM-AM transitioned into an all-news radio, but WBBM-FM, known locally as B96.3, remains a Top 40 station today.
