The Student Handbooks collection dates from 1966 to 2017 in 2.60 cubic feet (2 boxes total). The collection is made up of handbooks containing important information for students about the college and handbooks published by the Fiction Writing, Film, and Photography Departments. The college-wide handbooks contain directories, academic calendars, information on student publications and organizations, campus maps, and school policies.

The entirety of the Student Handbooks collection is available to all users. Any unprocessed items added to the collection that are not in this current inventory will become available for all users once the Archivist has updated the collection’s description.

Materials are the property of Columbia College Chicago. Intellectual property rights of work belong to the original creators. Materials within the collection that are published and copyrighted maintain their copyright protections and must be used according to United States Copyright Law. Use of this collection and its materials is understood to be primarily for research, teaching, and creative study; additional uses, such as publication, exhibition, or other appropriate purposes may be considered upon consultation with the Archivist.

History - Student Handbooks at Columbia College Chicago

Columbia College Chicago was founded as the Columbia School of Oratory by Mary A. Blood and Ida Morey Riley in 1890. The Student Handbooks collection holds handbooks published by the college starting in 1966, which have been published at various points in time by the Office of the Dean of Student Services, the Office of the Dean of Students, and the Office of Student Affairs.

Introduction

Columbia College Chicago publishes a yearly student handbook containing relevant information about the college. The Fiction Writing, Film, and Photography Departments have also published handbooks for students studying within those departments. This collection contains college-wide handbooks dating from 1966 to 2017 and departmental handbooks dating from 1973-2000 in 2.60 cubic feet (two boxes).

Collection Arrangement

The Student Handbooks Collection has been arranged into two series by handbook type. Within each series, the handbooks are arranged chronologically:



Series 1: College-wide Handbooks, 1966-2017
Series 2: Academic Departmental Handbooks, 1973-2000 and undated

Requirements for Researcher's Access

All physical materials and reformatted media must be viewed during a scheduled appointment time within the College Archives & Special Collections office. No materials are to be circulated unless otherwise consulted with the Archivist.

Initial Acquisition

The items of the Student Handbooks collection have been regularly transferred to the College Archives & Special Collections over time.

Approximately 2 cubic feet of extraneous and duplicate materials were discarded in a safe and secure manner on October 17, 2017.

0.37 cubic feet of material were removed from this collection on October 10, 2017 and transferred to other CASPC record groups.
