Biography - Marlene Lipinski

Marlene Lipinski was born in 1949 in Berlin, Wisconsin. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a BFA in painting and drawing in 1971 and continued on to receive her MFA in painting and drawing in 1975. She worked as the Coordinator of Graphic Design and Advertising programs at Columbia College Chicago from 1978-2000 and served as the Associate Professor of Art and Design until her retirement in May, 2015, completing 37 years as full time faculty. Marlene is an exhibited artist and published author in addition to her role in education. Her painted works focus on environmental aspects, specifically trees and humanity's relation to nature.

Introduction

The Marlene Lipinski Curated Collection was gathered by Marlene Lipinski, an artist, author, and former Art and Design faculty at Columbia College Chicago. During her 37 years (1978-2015) at Columbia College Chicago she developed a personal library of materials related to the subjects she taught, such as typography and graphic design. This collection features rare items, including leaf prints, magazines, journals, books, and a DVD-R, from that library pertaining to the subjects of Typography and Graphic Design and contains examples from 1499 to 2005, with the bulk dates ranging from 1893 to 2005.

Collection Arrangement

The Collection is arranged chronologically by the date in which the material was created. They are all housed within the same box, except the William Morris 1893 leaf, due to its size. That leaf is housed in a flat file drawer.

Requirements for Researcher’s Access

All physical materials must be viewed during a scheduled appointment time within the College Archives & Special Collections office. No materials are to be circulated unless otherwise consulted with the Archivist.
